General Update July 31, 2020
Jul 31, 2020
Keeping with the name of the page "In Short.....What is going one!" OSP MRT/SWAT have taken over security of the Mark O. Hatfield Federal Justice Building in Portland during the nightly riots. Hopefully their presence and discipline will bring the riots to a stop, so we can all try to return to normal, however that might be during these COVID-19 times.

There is a lot going on around the state. President Banks and I are traveling, sitting in a interviews, attending small group bargaining sessions as well as the whole group bargaining. in regards to bargaining we need as much input from the general membership as possible. Make sure you reach out to your worksite reps if you have questions or call Mark and I. If you have a good bargaining idea make sure someone hears it!

CURRENT ACTIVITIES:

  • Traveling the state to address ongoing disciplinary actions.  These are taking place in all corners of the state.

  • At the last SEC meeting the RMT and NWPA were official dissolved. Outside agencies continue to reach out to us for help, but we don't have the manpower to continue doing outside representation. The SEC recognized the votes of the membership and although the idea of NWPA and the RMT were made with good intentions, the membership has spoken and the SEC followed the memberships direction.

  • We are still working towards selling the back portion of OSPOA office property. In the meantime, we have a renter in the other half of our office building that is virtually covering our whole mortgage. The renter is make physical improvements, demonstrating they are not going anywhere anytime soon!

  • The SEC is in the processing of creating a workgroup to look at a sustainable dues reduction. If you are interested in being a part of the workgroup, let Mark or I know. We want at least one representative from each OSPOA member workgroup.

  • With Dave Hunt as our lobbyist we are maintaining a good presence at the Legislature to push the message that OSP needs more Troopers. If you have any questions about any bills before the legislature, reach out to me and I will ask Dave. He has been very responsive and knows the right people to ask.

  • Increasing the number of companies we partner with that will offer discounts to our members.

If you have any questions please feel free to reach out to Mark and I.

Thank you for taking a few moments to read up on what is happening,

Josh Wetzel

Vice-President
