Update from Lopez

Afternoon Everyone,

It’s been approximately 6 weeks since I officially took the position of Vice President of the Association.  I wanted to reach out and touch base.

During this time, OSPOA has been making an effort to be more accessible and available to members in the field.   I’ve visited The Dalles for a patrol meeting, Salem Patrol Meeting (that one was easy), MRT in Klamath, and I’ve got Albany and Portland coming up later this month.  Also, there were critical incidents in St. Helens, Enterprise and La Grande.

I plan on continuing to travel around the state and try to put myself wherever members gather.  That said, if you have a patrol meeting coming up and would like OSPOA to be there, then please shoot me an email or a text and OSPOA will make every effort to have at least one of us at your meeting.

Having said that, I want to thank Senior Trooper Charlie Rohlf for his kind words in his email.   I also want the membership to know there were plenty of people involved in the decisions made during that event.  James Koehler was among the first to get on the phone and say, “Go, and go now!”.  During my drive east, I talked to Justin Oxenrider for hours who advised me to, “just get there, and find out what the need is”.  Dan Chichester was on scene long before I was, and coordinated as much of the effort as I did.  And of course, I was on the phone in President Josh Wetzel’s ear the entire time and any decision to spend OSPOA funds was jointly made between the two of us.

Lastly, there are new things coming on the horizon.  Talks around a Retirement Medical Trust are starting up again.  The SEC is looking at the RMT that is already established by PORAC.  We understand there are lots of questions and concerns that would need to be addressed before any movement would be made.   After the SEC meeting in June, we will be scheduling some virtual town halls hosted by PORAC so members can ask specific questions directly with PORAC.  We’re also looking at other ways to get the most information out to the membership in the most thorough manner.  This is just a heads up that the conversation is on the way.
